Old Dutch Bister

Bister: 18 gram of traditional powder ink, made of soot from burnt wood. It is a deep brown yellow colour. With schellac it turns red, with walnut more yellow. Blue is by adding a water soluble pigment. Fill the glass bottle with water till about 2 cm under the rim, close and shake the bottle and you have a powerfull colour to paint and draw with. If you wish to keep the liquid longer, use distilled water. Further diluting makes the tones lighter to be used for washes. This is a technique Rembrandt also used.

Available in brown, red, blue and yellow. All colours can be mixed well together. All colours have a brown undertone and are not lightfast. Also, the dried paint is not waterfast. The bottle is 5 cm wide, the height is 6 cm and the neck is 2 cm.
