Postcard Exterior Rembrandt's House
The house was built in 1606, which is also Rembrandt's birthyear. Previous occupants have enlarged the house by adding an extra storey eliminating the original step gable. The present gable is a triangular pediment with a cornice in the Dutch Classical style, which was quite progressive at this time. Rembrandt bought this house in 1639 for 13.000 guilders. He was an important artist and had just received a commission to paint a picture which would later be known as the world famous Night Watch. He has lived here until 1658 when he was forced to move out due to financial problems. The card is 10.5 x 15 cm and is made of 280 gram paper.
