Pigments bright colours

The Rembrandt House demonstrates how to make your own oil paint from dry pigments. We have a selection of 12 pigments that match the pigments Rembrandt used. Not every pigment is the same because lead white is poisonous. We replaced it with titanium white. Smalt is replaced with synthetic ultramarine. And madder is an imitation. The pigments are ground in a mill at the famous Zaanse Schans.

Here is the selection of the 6 bright colours: Ultramarine Blue, Chalk Yellow, Titanium White, imitation Madder (pink), Lake Red and Bone Black (in order on the photo's). The pigments come in a glass jar of 50 ml with screw top. Every jar has a sticker with the name of the pigment in English. The weight differs per pigment, Madder is heavy, Bone Black is light. With each order comes a leaflet in English explaining how to make your oil paint, including how to make children's paint with milk. When you want more information take a look at the booklett Rembrandt's Paintingmaterials.

When taking the pigments out of the jar, wear a face mask. Once mixed with oil or water there is no need for the mask. Keep the ultramarine blue away from acids, this liberates hydrogen sulfide, a flammable toxic gas.

The 6 earth pigments you can find at related articles. We also sell a set of Rembrandt face masks. When you buy 6 pigments (no matter which) you get a face mask for free.
