REPRO B104 St. Jerome reading in an Italian landscape, c. 1653, printed by printingpress in true size, 21 x 26 cm, on a sheet of paper 29 x 38 cm.
This landscape and the harmonious composition are unquestionably borrowed from the work of Venetian artists. In his collection Rembrandt had two books of prints after Titian, so he must have been familiar with landscapes like this. The ascetic St. Jerome spent four years in the wilderness studyiing to deepen his understanding of the Christian doctrine. Beside him is his faithful companion, a lion.
